Sullivan’s Island has been rated by Parents Magazine as one of the top three places in the country to raise children. Quiet streets, a top rated public elementary school, a beautiful beach, and a close knit community of people interested in preserving an old fashioned lifestyle, all contribute to making Sullivan’s Island unique among East Coast beach communities. All this and only 15 minutes to downtown Charleston, one of the most beautiful and dynamic cites in the country.

Sullivan’s Island is home to Fort Moultrie, now a national monument where colonial forces defeated the British Fleet on June 28, 1776. Fort Moultrie has proudly played a part in the defense of our country from the Revolutionary war through World War II. Edgar Allen Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie in 1827 where he wrote the Gold Bug which is set on the Island.

The Island is now home to about 2000 residents who mostly live on the Island year round. The residents of the Island care deeply about defending the Island lifestyle and have protected over 90 acres of beachfront property from future development. There are no hotels or high-rise condominiums on the Island. The commercial district is small and quaint with a few great restaurants and bars.

The Island is friendly and casual and is connected to the mainland by a swing span bridge that crosses the Intracoastal Waterway. There is a town park with tennis courts and a playground for children. You can always see people riding around the island on golf carts and bikes. Many have lived on the Island their entire life, while newcomers are quick to be included in all aspects of Island life. The Governor of our state has his permanent home on the Island.

In short, Sullivan’s Island is a great place to live. People come to the Island and feel like they have stepped back in time where the children walk and ride bikes to school and are safe to run around the Island at will.

Everett Presson and his family live on Sullivan’s Island, where Everett also serves as a member of town council.
